For a lot of people the last couple of years has been really grim but as things start to even out that doesn’t mean you have to move forward in the same way.
Many people will go through life with at least one regret but if you learned nothing else from this pandemic hopefully you learned that life can be too short to regret things you haven’t done or opportunities you didn’t take.
Regret in my opinion is a waste of time because you don’t have to get to the end of your life with regrets if you make a decision not to allow fear to stop you from doing the things you really want to do.
Because I felt this was an important topic I did a little research so… What is Regret?
According to the experts and dictionary, regret is a negative emotional state that involves blaming yourself for a bad outcome, maybe feeling a sense of loss or sorrow at what might have been or wishing you could undo a previous choice that you made.
Ok, now that you know exactly what it is instead of the shoulda, coulda, woulda or what ifs, start thinking about what actually might be on your ‘bucket list.’ You can’t turn back the clock.
We all make mistakes at some point in life, whatever they may be but if you can look at those mistakes with compassion and understanding, you will find it easier to ‘let go’ and move on.
There’s an old adage that often still rings true; “it’s not the thing you do in life that you regret, it’s the things you don’t do.” When I was researching I came across this and thought I would share it with you in the hope that you move forward with energy and excitement about the next chapter of your life.
“If you never go after what you want, you’ll never have it. Live without regrets. If you want it, go for it.”
Make a list of all the things you would ‘ideally’ like to do if it were possible. Doesn’t matter how far-fetched they seem, write them down anyway! Then, starting with the easiest, set a goal and create a plan to achieve it.
This might be transitioning from working in an office to working from home or instead of having a job, starting your own business. It could be that you wanted to travel and you didn’t. Maybe you want to do something riskier like zip lining or climbing a mountain. It could in fact be a myriad of things you wanted to do but didn’t.
Look at where you are now in life, are you doing everything you want to do? Do you have a plan moving forward to achieve the things you dream about? If not, why not?
You don’t have to do everything at once, it may take you some time to achieve what you want to do. Keep going down the list one at a time until you have achieved all of those dreams.
I honestly believe you can do anything you truly want however, there may be a couple of things, much as you’d like to do them, that are not too realistic so, when you finish writing the list, delete them so they don’t get in your way.
Have fun with this, let yourself get excited and don’t look at why you can’t do something, look at how you can achieve what you want and then go for it.
‘Til Next Time
Have a fun week
